Cemetery Records are one of the best sources of information for the Genealogist. There are two basic types of Cemetery Records. The first one that most people think of is tombstone inscriptions or as some say monumental inscriptions. Now generally tombstone inscriptions records are not kept by the cemetery, they are usually kept by other organizations like historical societies. Now while tombstone inscriptions can contain more info than a simple birth record or death record, often they do not.

The second type of Cemetery Records are the interment records kept by the Cemetery itself. These records do not generally tell us about what is on the gravestone but rather who is underneath it. The reason for this is quite simple tombstones are generally put up by the family of the deceased so what goes on it is up to them. They can put as little or as much information on the gravestone as they want. However the records kept by the cemetery are whatever info that they felt it was necessary to gather for their own purpose.

Now how much information is in the records kept by the cemetery varies from one cemetery to the next. If you are lucky you can find information like place of birth, date of birth, place of death, names of relative who made the arrangements, cost of the grave or plot, religion, and sometimes even the cause of death. It is like vital records and obituaries all rolled into one. Now it is important to keep in mind that all the information that you will find associated with a persons death was most likely given by the grieving relatives of the deceased and as we all know people in mourning do not always get things right.
