Western Cemetery in Portland, Cumberland County, Maine
This is a partial transcript only
The Western Cemetery is Portland's second oldest cemetery. It was Portland's primary burial ground from 1829 untill the 1890s. Is is not in the best of shape at the moment as it is full of Broken and Disintegrating Headstones.

LONGFELLOW, Stephen, a Representative from Maine; born in Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine (then a district of Massachusetts), June 23, 1775; was graduated from Harvard University in 1798; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1801 and commenced practice in Portland, Maine; member of the general court of Massachusetts in 1814 and 1815; belonged to the Federalist Party and was a delegate to the Hartford convention in 1814 and 1815; Federalist presidential elector in 1816; elected to the Eighteenth Congress (March 4, 1823-March 3, 1825); was not a candidate for renomination in 1824; resumed the practice of his profession; member of the State house of representatives in 1826; overseer of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, 1811-1817; a trustee of Bowdoin College 1817-1836; president of the Maine Historical Society in 1834; died in Portland, Maine, August 2, 1849.
MELLEN, Prentiss, a Senator from Massachusetts; born in Sterling, Worcester County, Mass., on October 11, 1764; graduated from Harvard University in 1784; studied law; admitted to the bar in 1788 and commenced practice in Sterling and Bridgewater, Mass., and in Dover, N.H.; moved to Biddeford, Maine (until 1820 a district of Massachusetts), around 1791 and practiced law; settled in Portland, Maine, around 1806; member, Massachusetts executive council 1808-1809, 1817; presidential elector in 1817; trustee of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, 1817-1836; elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Eli P. Ashmun and served from June 5, 1818, to May 15, 1820, when he resigned; upon the admission of the State of Maine into the Union in 1820 became chief justice of the supreme court of that State and served until his resignation in 1834; member and chairman of the commission to revise and codify the public statutes of Maine in 1838; died in Portland, Maine, December 31, 1840; interment in Western Cemetery.
PARRIS, Albion Keith, (cousin of Virgil Delphini Parris), a Representative from Massachusetts and a Senator from Maine; born in Hebron, Maine (at that time a part of Massachusetts), January 19, 1788; graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1806; studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Paris, Maine, in 1809; prosecuting attorney of Oxford County in 1811; member, Massachusetts house of representatives 1813-1814; member, State senate 1814-1815; elected as a Republican from the State of Massachusetts to the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Congresses and served from March 4, 1815, to February 3, 1818, when he resigned; judge of the District Court of the United States for the District of Maine 1818-1820; delegate to the Maine constitutional convention in 1819; judge of probate for Cumberland County, Maine, 1820-1821; Governor of Maine 1822-1827; elected to the United States Senate from Maine and served from March 4, 1827, to August 26, 1828, when he resigned; judge of the supreme court of Maine 1828-1836; Second Comptroller of the United States Treasury 1836-1850; mayor of Portland, Maine, 1852; was not a candidate for reelection; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor in 1854; died in Portland, Maine, February 11, 1857; interment in Western Cemetery.
