Free Death Record on the Coffin Plate of William J Custance

Aged 80 years 6 months
Note: This coffin plate was found in Scarborough, Maine. From the style of the plate I would think William died about 1910 give or take 10 years. So if you take 1910 and take off 80 years that gives William a birth date of 1830.
I went and had a hunt for William J Custance in the United States Federal Census records on Ancestry.com. I found several individuals of interest as you can see below. Coffin plates often contain birth and death dates, and sometimes the place of birth or the occupation of a deceased person.
While not technically a true vital record, coffin plates can be seen as a substitute for vital records or at the least a good clue. In the case of people who died before civil registration it might be one of the few written records genealogists will find in their hunt for that brick wall ancestor!
