Note-He was a young man of extraordinary talent. He said on his death bed that he could see Jesus. In memory of William Asbery, who departed this life on March 12, 1846, aged 47 years. Note-He was from 1837 till his death, head engineer on the underground railroad from his residence to Pittsburg. $1,000 was said to have been offered for his head in Wheeling, W. Va. Lettis, wife of William Asbery, died Nov. 16, 1863, aged 60 years. In memory of Robert Asbery, who died March 27, 1891, aged 50 years. Barnes, died June 27th, 1850, in the 4th year of her age. Loretta J. Barnes, died July the 22d, 1850, aged 1 year and 7 months. In memory of Abraham Berkaw, who departed this life Jan. the 20th, 1810, aged 82 years. Benjamin Bebout, died Nov. the 8th, 1858, aged 99 years, 11 months and 4 days. He was a soldier of the Revolution and belonged th the Minute men against the Indians on the frontier of Washington Co., PA, at the close of the Revolution. Hannah, wife of Benjamin Bebout, died Feb. 11th, 1830, aged 66 years. Note-She was the mother of 18 children, 11 sons and 7 daughter. She was a native of New Jersey. Many a cup of water she pumped and gave General Washington when he passed her house during the dark days of the Revolution. Hannah, daughter of B. and H. Samuel Buchanan, died Nov. 26th, 1885, aged 60 years. In memory of Jacob Buxton, who died May 25, 1836, aged 86 years. He was one of the early settlers of Washington county. In memory of Hannah, consort of Jacob Buxton, who departed this life July 20, 1842, aged 89 years. Note-Mrs. Buxton was reowned as a kind of doctress among the sick. She knew more of the healing art and the medical use of roots and herbs than any in her day. She once cured a member of Congress from Washington county of chronic diarrhoea when the best physician, in the Federal city had failed. Aaron Buxton, died June 21, 1861, aged 77 years. Sarah Buxton, died July 3d, 1876, in the 81st year of her age. In memory of Richard Buxton, who died March 18, 1799, in the 18th year of his age. In memory of John M. Buxton, who died from the effects of an accidental gunshot wound June 24, 1866, in the 20th year of his age. Abner Bucher, died Jan. 28, 1855, in the 55th year of his age. Campbell, who was born May, 1814; graduated in 1840; was a Candidate for the office of the Holy Ministry, under the care of the Presbytery of Washington, and deceased on the 12th of Sept. 1842. An old stone here marked "I.C., " which is sup-posed to mark the grave of William, John, James and Charles Campbell's mother, who died and was buried here among the first interments in this cemetery. William Campbell, died June 2d, 1801, aged 62 years. He was an officer of the War of the revolution. Jesse Campbell, died Aug. 11th, 1858, in the 79th year of his age. In memory of Sibella Campbell, who died on the 7th of Dec., 1840, in the 63d year of her age. In memory of Charles Campbell, who departed this life March 21st, 1819, in the 66th year of his age. He was a soldier of the Revolutionary and Indian Wars. In memory of Abigail Campbell, who departed this life Sept. 19th, 1804, in the 38th year of her age. [MISSING NAME] K, 140th Regiment P.V. fell while pressing on in the advance of his company in the memorable charge of the 12th of May 1864, near Spottsylvania Court House, aged 19 years. James A., son of A. and M.A. Cummins, Co. K.,140th Regiment P.V., fell mortally wounded in the celebrated charge of the 12th of May 1864, near Spottsylvania Court House, aged 16 years. Mary J. wife of J.E. Culley, born Aug. 18th, 1841, died Aug. 29th, 1871. Agnes Cunningham, died July 14th, 1840, aged 60 years. In memory of Teresa Close, who departed this life July 23rd, 1890, aged 99 years. Note:-- she was a German by birth, had seen the great Napoleon the 1st and the Empress Josephine when they scattered their pin money to the crowds as the passed on the highway, and had seen the victorious French Aremy as it marched on the City of Berlin after the great battle of Jena in 1806. Robert Curry, died June 25th, 1838, aged 84 years. Note:--He was born in Scotland. When a young man he and two of his brother were presed aboard a British man-of war. In August 18782 he saw the great naval engagement between the French and English fleet off the coast of Dominica, when Admiral Degrasse was taken and carried to London by Admiral Rodney, who commanded the British Fleet. Isabella, wife of Robert Curry, died March the 28th, 1856, in the 98th year of her age. Archibald Curry, died May the 18th, 1878, aged 77 years. Robert Curry, died Aug. 19th, 1866, in the 76th year of his age. He was a soldier of the War of 1812. Keziah, wife of Robert Curry, died Feb. the 25th, 1838, aged about 38 years. Sarah, wife of Robert Curry, died Feb. the 6th, 1880, in the 78th year of her age. In memory of Jeremiah Cooke, who departed this life April the 15th, 1842, aged 43 years. In memory of James Cooke, who departed this life Dec. 1st, 1830, in the 73rd year of his age.He was a soldier of the Revolution. In memory of Martha M. Cooke, who departed this life Aug. 16th, 1833, in the 56th year of her age. David Cooke, died Dec. the 30th, 1857, aged 59 years of his age. Samuel Cooke, died Oct. 3d, 1879, in the 77th year. Oliver Perry Cooke, died Dec., the 6th, 1866, aged 52 years."Thy Will Be Done" David Xenophon, son of J. and M.A. Cooke, died March 17th, 1872, aged 2 years and 11 months. Walter Craig, died Feb. the 10th, 1875, in the 89th year of his age. Note:--He was for many years an Elder of Cross Creek Church, and for many years a Representative from Washington County, PA. In the Senate and House of representatives, and also in the Cnstitutional Convention of 1838. He was also a soldier of the War of 1812. Elizabet, consort, of Walter Craig, born Aug. the 8th, 1794, died Aug 18th, 1866. William Caig, was born Feb. 20th, 1832, died April the 5th, 1833. Walter Stockton Craig, was born April 26th, 1839, died Sept. 29th, 1840. Letitia J., daughter of S. and A.J. Caldwell, died Aug the 22nd, 1858, aged 5 years. In memory of Alfred Cummins, who departed this life March the 23d, 1888, in the 80th year of his age. Elizabeth J., daughter of A. and M.A. Cummins, died Dec. 2nd, 1852, aged 3 years. Benjamin H., son of A. and M.A. Cummins, of Co Mary Curry, died Aug. 28th, 1865, in the 70th year of her age. John Curry, died Nov. 17th, 1861, aged 42 years. James Dawson, died Jan. the 7th, 1847, aged 57 years. Martha DeFrance, died May the 4th, 1856, aged 82 years. James Donehoo, Esq., died June 16th, 1873, in the 74th year of his age. He was Justice of the Peace for 38 years in Cross Creek township, and was a member of the Legistature of Pennsylvania in 1858;was for many years a Ruling Elder of the Church of Cross Creek, and was known as a peacemaker in the community where he lived. Thomas M., son of Jas. and Eliza Donehoo, died April 17th, 1861, aged 19 years. Anna J., daughter of James and Eliza Donehoo, died Sept. 26th, 1856, aged 3 years. Sacred to the memory of Martha, wife of Thomas Donehoo, who departed this life January the 17th, 1838, in the 20th year of her age. The headstone to her grave was the first marble set up in the old cemetery of Cross Creek. Mary, wife of David Daugherty, and daughter of E.S. and M. A. Campbell, died April 16th, 1883, aged 25 years. Carrie Dimit, 1859, Sept. 20th, 1889, Jose Dimit, May the 8th, Aug. 27th, 1891. William Donehoo, died May the 11th, 1864, aged 51 years. In memory of Susan Denny, who departed this life Dec. 3rd, 1830, aged about 60 years. In memory of William Edgar, who died Oct. the 6th, 1803, aged 90 years. This was the father of the celebrated Judge Edgar. Sacred to the memory of James Edgar, Esq., who departed this life June the 8th, 1814, in the 71st year of his age. Note:--He was the renowed Judge Edgar who figured so conspicuously in the early annal of Washington County, and of Cross Creek Presbyterian Church. Born in York County, PA.,in 1774, married to Martha Smiley, sister of Wm. Smiley (of note as the person sent to New Orleans about 1787 by the churches of Upper Buffalo and Cross Creek with a flatboat load of flour, to pay the salary of Rev. Joseph.Smith), about the year 1787. In 1776 he was a member of the convention which met in Carpenter's Hall, Philadelphia, that hastened the Declaration of Independence; and in same year served in the State Constitutional Convention. In 1777 was a emember of Board of Council from York Co.; in 1778 he removed to what is now Washington County, settling on a farm now owned by Samuel Scott, about 4 miles northeast of Cross Creek Village. In 1779 he was elected as one of the first Board of Elders of Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, and through his influence Rev. Joseph Smith, of York Co., was called to the pastorate of Cross Creek and Upper Buffalo Churches; was nine times Moderator of Presbytery. In 1781 he and Col. john Canon were elected to and served as first members from Washington County, in the State Supreme Executive Council; about the same time he was elected and commissioned Justice of the Peace, which office he long held. In 1783 he was, according to Penna archives, elected County Treasurer of Washington County; in 1787 he, with Col. James Marshall, Gen. John Neville and Thomas Scott, were elected members from Washington County to the special State Convention to consider the Federal Constitution, which Constitution was ratified by the convention on Dec. 13, 1787, by a vote of 46 to 23, Pennsylvania being the second State to ratify the U.S. Constitution. In 1791 he was made one of the Associate Judges for Washington County. During the Whisky Rebellion he took strong grounds against the rebellion, and at Brownsville addressed a large meeting in a very strong speech in favor of upholding the law, and but few of his neighbors took part in the rebellion. In memory of Martha Edgar, consort of James Edgar, who departed this life Oct. the 7th, 1883, aged 47 years. This was the first wife of Judge Edgar. She was know as a doctress. Was sent for from far and near to doctor to the sick. She knew more of the healing art than any in her day in the Western country. Her death was regarded as a calamity to the whole community where she lived. Her husband's prayer the night she died was long remembered by all who heard it. In memory of Mary Edgar, who departed this life Oct. 10th, 1808, aged 68 years. This was the second wife of Judge Edgar. Adam Edgar, died Oct. 1st, 1827, in the 82nd year of his age. Jane, wife of Adam Edgar, died Oct. 13th, 1838, in the 80th year of her age. In memory of James Edgar, who departed this life Feb. the 8th, 1875, in the 88th year of his age. He was a nephew of Judge Edgar and a soldier of the War of 1812. He claimed that he felled the first tree to erect Fort Meiggs in 1812. Mary, wife of James Edgar, died March the 31st, 1856, in the 68th year of her age. Hugh Elliott, died March 15th, 1815, aged 75 years. Ann Elliott, died Aug, 15th, 1812, aged 55 years. Margaret, wife of Thomas Elder, died Dec. the 9th, 1852, in the 80th year of her age. Rufus c.,son of S. and M. Ewing, died Oct. the 9th, 1860, aged 6 months and 14 days. Robert Fleming, died April the 3rd, 1802, aged 96 years. Jane Fleming, died January the 16th, 1805, aged 95 years. In memory of James Fleming, who departed this life Feb. the 1st, 1830, in the 70th year of his age. A Ruling Elder for many years. John Fleming, died April 16th, 1858, aged 58 years. In memory of Robert Fleming, who departed this life July the 7th, 1824, in the 22d year of his age. Sarah Ann, daughter of J. and E. Fleming died Sept. the 8th, 1849, aged 3 years. Anna B., daughter of J. M. and J. Fleming, died Feb. 22, 1870, aged 1 year and 7 months. Willie J., son of R.A. and M.A. Fleming, died Jan. the 22d, 1872, aged 9 months. Eva M., daughter of R.A. and M.A. Fleming died Dec. the 6th, 1876, aged 1 year and 6 months. Jane F. Fleming, died June 10th, 1866, in the 34th year of her age. Willie, died June the 7th, 1861, aged 10 months. Lizzie, died April 20th, 1862, aged 4 years. Ella, died Aug. 2oth, 1866, aged 22 months. Scared to the memory of Margaret, consort of James Fitch, who departed this life April 27th, 1846, in the 27th year of her age. William, son of J. and S. Fulton, died Sept. 12th, 1840, aged 8 years and 9 months. Robert K. Futhey, died Oct. the 26th, 1854, aged 71 years. He was a soldier of the War of 1812. Elizabeth, wife of Robert K. Futhey, died Sept. the 9th, 1858, aged 75 years. Eliza, wife of Richard Fulk, and daughter, of R.K. and E. Futhey, died Oct. 16th, 1848, aged 36 years. In memory of Abraham Fink, who departed this life July 21st, 1825, aged--years. Note--This was a brother of the celebrated Mike Fink, who was reowned in early times as a keel-boatman, Indian hunter and sharpshooter; and also an associate of Lewis Wetzel. John Gardner, died Sept. 10th, 1821, aged 64 years. Elizabeth, wife of John Gardner, died Oct. 1st, 1853, aged 95 years. Matilda, wife of David Gault, died April 18th, 1853, in the 35th year of her age. Margaret A., daughter of David and M.P. Gault, died Oct. 29th, 1864, in the 5th year of her age. Gault. Our little Ella sleeps here, aged 4 years. This was a little daughter of William and Louisa Gault, who died of smallpox in the spring of 1856. In memory of Agnes Gilchrist, who departed this life--, 1811, aged 85 years. Andrew Gilchrist, died Sept. 22, 1805, in the 20th year of his age. John Gilchrist, died March the 2nd, 1805, in the 6th year of his age. In memory of Thomas Smith Gilchrist, who departed this life Dec. the 23rd, 1829, in the 23rd year of his age. In memory of Henry Graham, who departed this life Jan. the 31st, 1827, in the 87th year of his age. Note-He was one of the first settlers of Cross Creek township. Was for many years an Elder of Cross Creek Church and a Justice of the Peace for Cross Creek township. Tradition says that he donated the land for the Church of Cross Creek in 1779, when the church was organized. In memory of Mary Graham, who departed this life Nov. the 29th, 1814, in the 70th year of her age. John Graham, died Oct. 9th, 1830, in the 57th year of his age. Jane, wife of John Graham, died March the 25th, 1848, in the 73d year of her age. In memory of Jane Graham, who departed this life Aug. the 17th, 1818, in the 18th year of her age. In memory of Polly Graham, who departed this life Oct.18th, 1818, in the 22nd year of her age. Joseph Graham, died March 19th, 1855, in the 44th year of his age. Jane, wife of Joseph Graham, died April 17th, 1856, in the 37th year of her age. Henry M.Graham, a member of the Young's Battery, Fort Delaware, died July the 22nd, 1863, aged 22 years. Ella J., daughter of J. and J.L. Graham, died Feb. 21st, 1859, in the 10th year of her age. Martha C.E. Graham, died Sept. 27th, 1870, aged 16 years. Ebenezer P. Graham, died Feb. the 27th, 1871, aged 19 years. In memory of John Griffith, who departed this life April 1st, 1825, in the 53rd year of his age. His mother, Lettice Griffith, and his brother Thomas Griffith, are both interred by his side. In memory of Samuel Greer, who departed this life April 1st, 1838, aged 14 years. Thomas Hays, died April the 9th, 1828, in the 83rd year of his age. He was a soldier of the Revoluntionary War. Moses Hays, born Oct. 2d, 1765, died July 10th, 1837. In memory of William Hays, who departed this life July 8th, 1821, in the 30th year of his age. He was killed by a cut from a scythe. David Hays, died Jan. the 19th, 1847, aged 44 years. Jane, wife of Levi Hays, died Aug. 29th, 1852, in the 36th year of her age. Thomas C. Hays, of the 140th Reg. Pa. Vol., killed July 2nd, 1863, aged 23 years. Was killed at Gettysburg. Johnston, died Aug. the 27th, 1880, aged 7 months. Amos Johnston, died May the 23rd, 1862, aged 62 years. Elizabeth, wife of Amos Johnston, died Sept. the 30th, 1866, in the 76th year of her age. Mary, wife of A.L. Johnstone, died Oct. the 6th 1872, in the 40th year of her age. In memory of Capt. John Johnston, who departed this life A.D. 1821, in the 100th year of his age. He was a brave soldier of the Revolution; had stood on the battlefield of Brandywine, and many other engagements, for his country's cause. In memory of Molly Johnston, who departed this life Aug. 22, 1855, aged 95 years. In memory of John Johnston, who departed this life March 8th, 1850, aged 86 years. He served in the Army in the 1794 that President Washington sent out to quell the Whiskey Rebellion. Anna Johnston, died April 27th, 1850. aged 84 years. In memory of Thomas Johnston, who departed this life Dec. the 12th, 1838, aged about 70 years. In memory of Robert Johnston, who departed this life Oct. 9th, 1852, aged 70 years. In memory of Rebecca Johnston, who departed this life Feb. 10th, 1873, aged 95 years. In memory of Eleanor Johnston, who departed this life Jan. 24, 1827, in the 23rd year of her age. She was a daughter of the venerable Andrew Farrar, long as Elder and Clerk and leader of the singing of the sacared music in the Church of Cross Creek. In memory of what was called "OLD HAGAR," an old colored lady who had been a slave of Wm. Campbell, but was freed by him at his death in 1801. She died May the 11th, 1854, supposed to be 105 years old. In memory of Samuel Haws, who died May 12th, 1885, aged 69 years. In memory of Elizabeth Haws, who died Feb. 15th, 1877, in the 71st year of her age. George Huber, died Feb. 8th, 1888, aged 19 years. Teresa Huber, died the 19th of Dec. 1869, aged 7 years. Sacred to the memory of Mary Ann Ingram, who departed this life Sept. 16th, 1831, aged 11 months. Rev. Wm. C. Jackson, born Dec. 10, 1810, died Aug. 20, 1888. "CHRIST IS MY HOPE." Ebenezer Jennings, died Nov. 21st, 1808, in the 32nd year of his age. Note.-He was a very eminent physician and Christian gentleman. He was the son of the Rev. Jacob Jennings, long a pastor of Dunlap's Creek Presbyterian Church, Fayette County Pa., who claimed descent from one of the pilgrim fathers of the Mayflower, and was the father of the late Rev. S.C. Jennings, D.D. He represented Washington County, Pa., in the Legislature in 1806 and 1807 and would have been nominated for Congress in 1808 ( the year of his death) had his health permitted. The Hon. Jonathan Jennings, the first Governor of Indiana;the Hon. David Jennings, of Ohio, a member of Congress;and the Rev. Obadiah Jennings, D.D., from that State, who died at Nashville, Tenn., in 1832, were his brothers. Mercy, wife of Ebenezer Jennings, died July the 31st, 1806, in the 26th year of her age. Pheba, wife of Aaron Johnston, died Jan. the 27th, 1878, aged 23 years. In memory of Agnes Kelley, who departed this life Januaary 23rd, 1838, in the 87th year of her age. Her first husband, John Yeaman, was killed by the Indians in the spring of 1782, the same day Park and Robinson were killed. Yeaman was buried on the farm now owned by John J. Cairnes in Jefferson township. It can still be shown by Mrs. James Cassidy, and will soon be marked by a stone post, to perpetuate his memory. Aaron Kerr, born June 4th, 1776, died May the 1st, 1824. He was born in New Jersey; was 3 years elected to the Legislature of that State; was 7 years in the Pennsylvania Legislature, and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1838. He was a lineal descendant of Walter Kerr of Scotland. Sarah Kerr, born July 5th, 1776, died Feb. the 17th, 1860. I.H. Kerr, born January the 14th, 1815, died Feb. the 1st, 1866. He was for many years a merchant in Cross Creek and was reowned far and near as an honest and upright man in all his dealings with his fellow man. In memory of William Kerr, who departed this life March 31st, 1807, aged 69 years. James Kerr, born Oct. 3rd, 1782, died July the 19th, 1847. Hannah, wife of James Kerr, born April the 9th, 1784, died Sept. 24th, 1842. James M. Kerr, born June the 8th, 1809, died Oct. 28th, 1846. Wm. Kerr, born May the 3rd, 1805, died May the 26th, 1824. Wm. Kerr, 2nd, born July the 7th, 1827, died Nov. the 11th, 1829. Jane Kerr, born Aprill 3rd, 1819, died Oct. 14th, 1821. Alexander Kerr, born Feb. 4th, 1816, died April 20th, 1833. James Leeper, died Aug.16, 1826, aged 80 years. Mary Leeper, died Nov. 9th, 1826, aged 80 years. John Leeper, died Oct. 22nd, 1849, aged 73 years. Martha Leeper, died June the 2nd, 1850, aged 70 years. Jane Leeper, died June the 13th, 1868, aged 68 years. In memory of Hugh Lee, who departed this life Aug. 28th, 1813, in the 73rd year of his age. In memory of Mary Lee, who departed this life Nov. the 30th, 1820, in the 75th year of her age. Sacred to the memory of Hugh Lee, who departed this life April the 24th, 1837, in the 64th year of his age. He was for many years a Ruling Elder in the Church of Cross Creek, and was known in his day for his stout honesty and his zeal for the Church of Christ. His death was regarded as a loss to the whole community where he lived, as he was a peacemaker in both Church and State, and could keep down strife in either, when no others could. Hannah, wife of Hugh Lee, born May the 2nd, 1787, died Feb. 24th, 1882. This was an old mother in Israel. She was born in Cumberland Co., Pa., before the adoption of the Federal Constitution, and lived to see the 21st President in the presidential chair. William Lee, born July 24th, 1807, died Aug. 17th, 1888. He was for many years a Ruling Elder of Cross Creek Church. Jane Craig, wife of William Lee, died Feb. the 14th, 1890, aged 69 years. John Lee, died Arpil 23rd, 1856, in the 46th year of his age. Mrs. Marian Stockton Lee, born April 2d, 1844, died May 17th, 1892. "In Christ I will rise again." In memory of Mary Ann, consort of John Lee, who departed this life June the 28th, 1835, in the 22d year of her age. Hannah Ann Lee, died Dec. the 21st, 1835, aged 8 months. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Lee, who departed this life Jan. the 11th,1837, aged 3 years and 10 months. Margaret, wife of James Lee, died Sept. the 23rd, 1828, aged 38 years. Liggett, died Aug. the 3rd, 1885, aged 33 years. Aaron Lyle,died Sept. 2nd, 1825, aged 66 years. He was a soldier of the War of the Revolution and also of the War of 1812. Was many years in the Senate and House of Representative of Pennsylvania, and was a member of Congress from 1809 to 1817. Eleanor Lyle, wife of Aaron Lyle, died De. the 13th, 1849, in the 91st year of her age. In memory of Aaron, son of Aaron and Eleanor Lyle,who died January the 10th, 1807, aged 2 years. Moses Lyle, died June 10th, 1840, in the 58th year of his age. He served in the War of 1812. Sarah, wife of Moses Lyle, died Oct. 2nd, 1836, aged 44 years. John Lyle, Sr., died April 17th, 1826, in the 74th year of his age. He was a soldier of the Revolution. In memory of Robert, son of John and Elizabeth Lyle, who died A.D. 1793, aged 9 years. "Our Father," James Lyle, died March the 5th, 1860, in the 75th year of his age. "Our Mother," Mary, wife of James Lyle, died Dec. 2nd, 1867, in the 84th year of her age. William Lyle, died March 23d, 1886, in the 61st year of his age. James, infant son of W. and Sarah J. Lyle, died June the 7th, 1856, aged 5 months. Annie, daughter of Wm. and Jane Lyle, died Dec. the 30th, 1883, aged 26 years. Mary, daughter of J.J. and R.D. Lyle, died Oct. 6th, 1886, in the 36th year of her age. William H., son of J.J. and R.D. Lyle, died Sept. 10th, 1865, in the 6th year of his age. In memory of David Lyle, who departed this life Sept. A.D. 1791, aged 30 years. He was a teamster in the War of the Revolution under General Anthony Wayne, and saw hard service, which caused his death at an early age.
