The following is a partial list of Inscriptions in the Cross Creek Presbyterian Church Graveyard, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Cross Creek was founded in the early nineteenth century. Originally written in 1894, this database is a an index to headstone inscriptions. Inscriptions provide the decendent's name, date of death, and age, along with other biographical information. Containing the names of over 1000 persons, this database can be a great source of information for people researching their ancestors in nineteenth century Pennsylvania.

In memory of John Marquis, who departed this life Feb. 25th, 1822, in the 72nd year of his age. He was for many years a ruling Elder of the Church of Cross Creek and was one of the first settlers of this region of Washington county. Had been in many campaigns and expeditions during the Indian War from 1776 to 1783.

In memory of Sarah Marquis, who departed this life Nov. the 14th, 1844, aged 82 years.

In memory of John Marquis, who departed this life Jan. the 16th, 1844, aged 60 years. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, under Gen. William Henry Harrison.

He was a ruling Elder in the Church of Cross Creek for many years before his death. He died respected by all who knew him.

Mary, wife of George Miller, died Oct. the 30th, 1848, in the 80th year of her age.

George Miller, 2nd, died July the 2nd, 1883, aged 78 years. He was for many hears a ruling Elder in the Church of Cross Creek, and afterwards at Pine Grove.

Jane, wife of George Miller, died July the 27th, 1876, in the 60th year of her age.

George Miller, died Nov. the 25th, 1850, aged 64 years.

Mary Miller, died Oct. 22nd, 1867, aged 86 years.

Ann Miller, died October 28th, 1893, aged 72 years. Foot Note-Mary Miller was buried in this yard in 1813 at an advanced age. She was the widow of Oliver Miller, one of the insurgents who was mortally wounded at Gen. Neville's the 16th of July, 1794. She died at the house of Wm. Wallace, her son-in-law, where James Manson now resides, near Mt. Prospect Church.

Samuel McCarrell, born March the 1st, 1788, died June the 12th 1881.

Elizabeth, wife of Samuel McCarrell, born Aprill the 9th, 1898, died Nov. the 8th, 1880.

John McCarrell, born April the 17th, 1866, died Aug. the 19th, 1885.

In memory of Jane McCarrell who deparated this life Oct. 13th, 1887, aged 73 years. She was a daughter of the late Jesse Spencer.

Dr. Hugh K. McClelland, died Aug. 25, 1860, aged 40 years.

Rebecca Magee McClelland, born Dec. 31, 1829, died Sept. 10, 1854.

In memory of Jane McClelland, who departed this life Nov. the 30th, 1824, in the 24th year of her age.

Infant daughter of J. S. and J. L. McCorkle, died Sept. the 10th, 1875, aged 6 weeks.

Amanada, wife of Wm. S. McCreary, died Aug. the 23rd, 1874, aged 33 years.

Samuel B. McCreary, son of W.S. and A. McCreary, died March the 9th, 1883, in the 19th year of his age.

Robert McCready, was born in Scotland March the 28th, 1752; served as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War; died Aug. 10th, 1846. He emigrated from Scotland in the year 1772, when 20 years old. In 1776 he volunteered in the Army of the Revolution, in what was called the Flying Camp, where he saw hard service for his country;s cause during that memorable year. In the spring of 1777 he came out to Pittsburgh with a friend and came out from there and bought and settled on what is yet known as the old McCready farm, in Jefferson township, Washington Co., Pa. Here his cabin stood on the frontier, and here he had to battle with the Indians tull 1783. He was in many hard scrimages and fights with them. In 1779 he picked the site and drove the stake for the Church of Cross Creek, and in the history of his life, which he wrote in his own hand, he said he helped to clear and fence the graveyard with his own hand. In 1792 he was chosen one of the ruling elders for the Church of Cross Creek, which position he held till his death. He wqs for more than half a century a justice of the peace. In the Warof 1812 he served as adjutant in a short campaign. Like the Father of his Country, he was "first in war and first in peace."

Samuel McKibben, departed this life Sept. the 27th, 1836, in the 77th year of his age. He was long a ruling elder in the Church of Cross Creek, and served in many campaigns against the Indians.

Mary, wife of Samuel McKibben, departed this life June the 26th, 1833, in the 75th year of her age.

Elizabeth McKibben, departed this life March 10th, 1814, in the 22nd year of her age.

Samuel McKibben, died Sept. the 8th, 1873, aged 77 years.

Catherine, wife of Samuel McKibben, died December 11th, 1885, aged 84 years.

In memory of William Patterson, who departed this life June the 29th, 1818, in the 86th year of his age. He was a brave old soldieer of the Revolution. Settled on Cross Creek, on the old Patterson homestead in 1778, where he defended his home from the savages till 1883. Elizabeth Patterson, died Jan. 30th, 1826, in her 79th year.

Her husband, Col. Joseph Reed, of Chansford, York County, Pa., was a brave old soldier of the Revolution. He was a member of the Convention that met at Carpenter's Hall June 18th, 1776, which hastened Congress in passing the Declaration of Independence, the 4th of July, 1776. He served in many campaigns during the hard struggle for the liberty of his country. In 1780 and in 1781 he was President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania and was one of the main instigators to pass the Act of Emancipation freeing the slaves of the Keystone State. He died in 1804, aged 71 years, and is buried in Chansford churchyard, York Co., Pa.

William Vance, died April the 18th, 1788, in the 70th year of his age. This was the Major William Vance who was one of the founders of Cross Creek Church in 1779.

The body of Joseph Vance was interred here May the 6th, 1832, in the 82nd year of his age. He was long a ruling elder in the Church of Cross Creek. He was the proprietor of Vance's Fort. Was also in some of the noted campaigns against the Indians. Was for many years a member of the Assembly and Senate of Pennsylvania.

Catherine, wife of John Wilkins, Esq., died April 25th, 1841, aged 75 years. She was a daughter of Judge James Edgar.

In memory of William Wilkins, who departed this life Feb. the 5th, 1815,in the 24th year of his age.

Thomas Wilkin, an Elder in the Church of Cross Creek, died Oct. 24th, 1853, aged 55.

John S. Wilkins, died Aug. the 6th, 1868, in the 69th year of his age.

Thomas B. Wilkins, departed this life Feb. the 23rd, 1839, in the 15th year of his age.

Jane Wilkin, departed this life Aug. 1st, 1836, in the 14th year of her age.

Sacred to the memory of Wilkin, infant son of David and Ann Wilkin, who departed this life Feb. 10th, 1826, aged 4 days.
