LACEY ARLENE, youngest daughter of GEORGE W. and EMMA LACEY LANNING, was born in Davis City, Iowa, on Jan. 23, l898, and departed this life at the family home on North Main Street in Chariton, Iowa, on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 22, l925, at l o'clock, after an illness of several months' duration. All that medical aid and loving hands could do was done, but of no avail and death claimed a loved one.
Her early childhood was spent in Davis City, then the family removed to Chariton, where LACEY attended school and graduated from the Chariton High School. Later she attended the State Teachers' College at Cedar Falls, and since then has been engaged in teaching school until last October, when ill health compelled her to resign her position as teacher in the Garden Grove Schools.
At about eleven years of age, she confessed her faith in Christ and united with the M.E. Church of this city, and has ever been a faithful member and worker in the League, choir and Sunday School.
She was greatly loved, especially in the home, and by all who knew her and will be sadly missed by a host of relatives and friends.
She was a member of the Rebekah and Yeoman Lodges, also the Nonpareil Club and Young Women's Foreign Missionary Society.
Those left to mourn her early departure, besides her parents, are the following brothers and sisters: BEN W., of Iowa City; GEO. R., of Russell; HARRY A., of New Orleans; CLAUDE G., of Chariton; WILL, of Ottumwa; MRS. E.F. HYDE, of Portland, Oregon; MRS. GENEVIEVE ORDWAY, MRS. DAISY BOSWELL, RUTH and ZULMA, all of Chariton. One sister, VIVIAN, preceded her in death three months ago. All were present at the last sad rites excepting MRS. HYDE and HARRY A., who were unable to attend.
Largely attended funeral services, conducted by her Pastor, Rev. Frank Bean, were held at the M.E. Church on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Chariton Cemetery. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful, tender messages of love for the dead and of sympathy for the living.
LACEY LANNING was beloved by all who knew her for her sweet and gentle disposition and many lovable attributes, and her passing away in young womanhood, when life seemed full of promise, is deplored by all. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the grief-stricken parents, her brothers and sisters, who have been doubly bereaved in the short space of three months.
Among the number in attendance at the last rites were her brothers, BEN, of Iowa City; GEORGE and family, of Russell; WILL and family, of Ottumwa; also MISS NEVA GRANT, of Avery; MRS. OCHLMAN and daughter, LOUISE, and OTIS MORRIS and family, of Garden Grove and Derby.
