Obituary of George Fisher
The following obit was found in the Fisher Family Bible. It appears to
have belonged to Henry Fisher who was the son of George and Barbara Moss
Fisher. This obit was glued to the inside of the Bible. [Terri Saylor]
George Fisher
George Fisher was born in Franklin county, Virginia, in the year 1820
and died in Mexico, Miami county Indiana, January 23, 1890, in his 70th
year. With his parents, the late Peter Fisher and wife, in 1828,
deceased moved from Virginia to Ohio where they resided until 1836, when
they came from there here and settled in the then semi-wilderness of Eel
river. Soon after reaching his majority George was married to Barbara Moss, daughter of the William Moss Sr., of most precious memory. To this
union was born nine children, five sons and four daughters, five of whom
four sons and one daughter and the venerable companion of his youth yet
live to mourn the loss of a kind husband and a generous father. The
first year after marriage the young couple lived in a log cabin on the
home farm or rather in the clearing. When not employed in tilling the
crop the time was spent in clearing a spot and building a cabin on an
adjoining tract which in the next year became the family home of the
young couple, where by perseverence and industry in time the wilderness
of woods gave way to fertile fields. The cabin gave way to the more
modern hewed log house, which in time gave way to the commodious frame
dwelling. While temporal wants were well looked after, the spiritual
wants were not neglected by this young couple. Whether or not the
fathers of both these young folks being ministers of the gospel had any
thing to do with it, early in life they united with the Dunkard church
and for over forty years have been faithful, exemplary christians; and
it may be well to mention that two of the sons are ministers of the
gospel. The religion that was so beneficial in clearing up the forest
and making a pleasant home, and had such a blessed influence in the
rearing of a family, deceased found to be most precious in sickness and
in death, and although not able to converse with his friends in his last
moments, his actions, which always speaks more explicit than words, said
plainly as death drew near, "Though I walk through the valley and shadow
of death I will fear no evil for Thou art with me, Thy rod and Thy staff
shall comfort me." Funeral from the Dunkard church on Saturday,
conducted by Elder Shively. N. B. H.
