Funeral Tribute to John Ogden who died on September 5, 1872 at the age of 46 years
Funeral cards are an overlooked free genealogical resource. They often contain both the Birth date and Death date and can be used as a substitute for birth and death records ( Vital Records ). Now from a technical point of view they are not a true substitute for vital records. But it's a good place to start. If you interested in what things qualify as a true Vital Records there is a good article at the Olive Tree. Unfortunately these valuable resources are scattered and there has not been a single repository for this valuable resource until now. It is my hope to create the best funeral card database on the net.

Funeral Tribute to John Ogden who died on September 5, 1872 at the age of 46 years
A very unique and unusual funeral tribute from 1872. This layered embossed and die-cut Victorian
beauty was a tribute to John Ogden who died on September 5, 1872 at the age of 46 years and was interred at
St. John's Church, Manchester on the 10th. The beloved husband of Rachel Ogden.
Beautifully constructed in what appears to be layers of heavy paper, measuring 9 inches wide by
11 1/2 inches tall, it has been diecut and embossed in the shape of a cathedral, depicting two
praying angels and wonderfully ornate Victorian Gothic fretwork. It is rich in fine detail which
has miraculously made it almost intact 132 years to this point in time.
The photograph of the deceased is 4 1/2 inches wide by 6 inches high and is like a sepia toned cabinet card and is still affixed to the back of the large diecut mourning card. The small postcard mounted near the bottom of the diecut 'cathedral' is 4 1/2 inches wide by 3 inches high and is in itself a work of art. Silhouetted in cream colored raised relief on a black background - like a cameo -and echoing the cathedral theme, with cypress trees, flowers, a praying child, and an angel praying over a grave; Centered in the middle is the poem, 'A faithful friend, a parent dear, a tender father lieth here; great is the loss that we sustained, but in Heaven we hope it is his gain'. Note the shield shaped crest at the top center which has a Viking ship, and the same weeping trees, and flowers, and draped border. Considering how fragile it is, it is in remarkable shape. It is missing a spire on the right hand top side, parts of the top of the spire on the left side, and possibly other bits and pieces, but this is hard to determine. The edges along the bottom, the right and left sides, appear to be original and intact and it's the top edge which was more intricate that seems to have been damaged over time. Embossed in the lower left corner is the name ' Wood '. This was all attached at some point to a black background which is quite fragile and is missing pieces.
