Luebec Washington County Maine 1894 ~ 1895 Store Ledger
Lubec is a small town in Washington County, Maine close to the Canadian border. It was settled in 1785, incorporated on June 21, 1811, Named after Lübeck Germany, the town includes the communities of Lubec, North Lubec, South Lubec, and West Lubec.
Lubec contains the easternmost point of land in the United States: West Quoddy Head, on which the famous lighthouse of the same name is located. Lubec was once the sardine canning capital of the world.
This is a great old store ledger book from Luebec in Washington County, Maine. The book starts in Aug 1894 and ends in October 1895.
The book is full of great genealogical and historical information for Luebec and the surrounding area.
The ledger contains 300 pages with over 4000 entries. Each entrie gives the name of the person making the purchase, what they bought, how much they paid and how they paid. Most of the purchases are by local folks but some are also for local businesses like the Eureka Packing Co and the New England Packing Co.. Their are also some Schooners listed and the town of Luebec made many purcheses. Many of the people listed in the book are Canadian. Lubec is close to Charlotte County, New Brunswick Canada and as a result their was a lot of back and forth movement of people and goods.
This ledger book is a fantastic one-of-a-kind genealogy resource for the area in and around Luebec, Maine and can help to replace the missing 1890 U.S.census.
Just some of the surnames in the book are Allen, Brown, Reacock, Cherry, Edgeomt, Kennedy, Lamson, Parker, Stafles, Sullivan, Mc Bride, Mc Donald, Mc Lean, Neagle, Case, Treca??.
I am pleased to announce that I am slowly scanning all of these wonderful Ledger Books. Each book will be published as a downloadable PDF file on AncestorsAtRest website so that genealogists and historians can access them freely. Please be patient as I work towards bringing them all online.
